5 Tips For Fueling When Eating Out

< back to blog home

By Kristin Hedstrom

Between early-morning practices, school, homework, and weekend regattas, eating out with friends can be one of the best ways to unwind and enjoy time together.

As a high school rower, you have a lot going on, and food plays an important role in keeping you energized throughout it all. It helps you power through practice, concentrate in class, recover between training sessions, and feel ready for whatever comes next.

But fueling your body doesn't mean every meal needs to be planned out perfectly. Sometimes, it's about grabbing pizza with your teammates after a race, going out for burgers with friends, or trying that new restaurant everyone's been talking about.

Food is fuel, but it's also connection, enjoyment, and part of making memories. You can absolutely enjoy eating out with friends while giving your body the nourishment it needs to row strong.

Here are my top 5 tips for fueling your body while eating out:

1. Preview the menu beforehand.

Have you ever sat down at a restaurant with your friends, opened the menu, and realized you have absolutely no idea what to order?

Maybe everyone is talking about practice, school, or the weekend's race, and you're so caught up in the conversation that you barely have time to look at the menu.

Taking a quick look beforehand can make ordering easier, especially when you're hungry after a long day of school and training. You can get an idea of what's available and think about what sounds good without feeling rushed.

As a rower, your body needs carbohydrates for energy, protein to support muscle recovery, and fats for energy and other important functions. Luckily, most restaurant menus offer plenty of ways to get a mix of these nutrients.

That might mean ordering pasta, a burrito with rice and beans, a burger with fries, a chicken bowl, or whatever else sounds delicious to you.

And don't forget to consider your training schedule. After a tough practice or a full day of racing, you may be especially hungry—and that's completely normal! Your body has been working hard, and eating a satisfying meal helps replenish the energy you've used.

2. Eat consistently throughout the day.

If you know you're going out for dinner, make sure you're still eating breakfast, lunch, and snacks throughout the day.

Between classes, early practices, and after-school activities, it's easy to get busy and lose track of time. But your body needs consistent fuel to support the demands of rowing, even on days when you're eating out later.

Start your morning with something satisfying, like oatmeal with fruit and peanut butter, eggs with toast, or a smoothie with yogurt and oats. At lunch, enjoy a meal that gives you energy for the rest of your school day, such as a sandwich with fruit, a rice bowl with chicken, or pasta with your favorite toppings.

And if there's a long stretch between lunch and dinner, bring a snack! Granola bars, trail mix, bananas, yogurt, and peanut butter sandwiches are all easy options for busy student-athletes.

Most importantly, don't skip meals or snacks to save room for dinner. Your body needs energy throughout the day, and eating regularly helps you stay fueled for practice, school, and everything else on your schedule.

As a high school rower, your goal is to build habits that support both your performance and your life outside the boathouse. That includes enjoying good food, sharing meals with people you care about, and giving yourself the flexibility to do both.

Because at the end of the day, fueling well isn't about eating perfectly. It's about eating enough, enjoying a variety of foods, and giving your body what it needs to keep showing up—on the water and off.

3. Don’t worry about being perfect.

Eating out is part of life, and you don’t have to skip your favorite foods to stay on track with your rowing goals. Instead, think about what will help you feel energized, satisfied, and ready to perform. Enjoy the foods you love, and remember that fueling your body is about more than just one meal. As a rower, you need enough energy to support tough practices, recovery, and everything else you do throughout the day. There’s room for all kinds of foods in a balanced diet!

4. Pay attention to what your body needs.

Your body is constantly working hard, especially during rowing season, so it’s important to give it the fuel it needs. During a meal, check in with yourself: Am I still hungry? Do I need more food to feel satisfied? Would some water help? Learning to recognize your hunger, thirst, and fullness cues can help you fuel your body throughout the day. Remember, your needs can change depending on how hard you’ve trained, how much you’ve moved, and how much recovery your body needs.

5. Make time for movement and recovery.

Rowing takes a lot of energy, strength, and endurance, so taking care of your body outside of practice matters, too. Walking your dog, spending time outside, or going for a relaxed walk with friends can be great ways to move and unwind. Just remember that rest is an important part of training, too! You don’t need to add extra exercise to make up for a meal out. Focus on finding a balance between training hard, eating enough, getting plenty of sleep, and giving your body time to recover.

As you balance school, friends, and rowing, remember that there’s no such thing as a perfect diet. Focus on eating a variety of foods, fueling consistently throughout the day, and giving your body what it needs to train, recover, and grow. Enjoy meals with friends, eat the foods you love, and trust that one meal doesn’t define your health or your performance. Your goal is to build habits that help you feel strong, energized, and ready to give your best on the water!
